Baku is a city in Azerbaijan. Most of the people know this city because of its oil deposits. Also the Eurovision Song Contest took place there. But the city has more to offer. In their carpet manufacturies carpets are produced in the traditional way, by hand. The most common pattern is the Mir-e butha. Carpets with this pattern appear to be burning. That’s why its also called the flame pattern.
While antique Baku carpets have woolen warps, the weft is made of cotton. The density is not very high. The usually small carpets from Baku belong to the culture of Azerbaijan and are being produced since antiquity.
