Hand-knotted oriental carpets are an often admired luxury object. With the right treatment, they last incomparably longer than their machine-made counterparts and attract the attention of your visitors even after decades. A real Persian carpet may even increase in value over a longer period of time. To enjoy your carpet for a long time, the experts at Nain Trading have prepared a handful of general tips and advice for you.

Protruding threads and excess wool

Sometimes it can happen that individual threads stick out. Hand-knotted carpets are not 100% flawless and that's what gives them their own character. If individual threads stick out, these are still remnants of the knot. This does not mean that a knot is loose, but that the thread was overlooked when cutting it down. Therefore, please do not try to pull the thread. It can be cut off easily and safely.

Our carpets are lint-free, but it may be that a new carpet still has excess wool in the pile after wetting. This wool can be easily sucked out of the carpet with a commercial vacuum cleaner. After a few times vacuuming, the wool is completely removed.

Folding marks and possible odours of care products

During shipping, smaller but visible folds can occur in the carpet. These folds are absolutely harmless and disappear completely after some time, usually after 3 - 4 weeks. If you do not want to wait so long, you can quickly and easily iron these places with a steam iron on a level for wool and steam. It should always be ironed in alignment of the pile.

The carpets have a very long journey from oriental countries behind them. The natural care products in these countries are usually not perfumed. Any odors from these care products will disappear after 2-3 weeks at the latest. As a rule, however, the carpets are all odorless at delivery.

Regular care

We recommend to wash your Persian or Oriental rug regularly, but not daily, with a standard vacuum cleaner. This removes dust and dirt that would make the carpet look dull and blunt over time. Depending on the vacuum cleaner, the suction power should not necessarily be set to the highest level to protect the pile.

Mostly furniture is standing on the hand-knotted carpet. This is absolutely safe, as long as you slightly relocate the furniture a few times a year or turn the carpet, for example, 180 degrees. If the pieces of furniture always stand in the same place with their weight, the pile can be pushed in here. Although hand-knotted carpets are significantly more resistant than industrially manufactured, they are not immune to heavy loads.

If UV light shines on the Oriental rug directly at certain points, it makes sense to turn the rug a few times a year so that the same spot is not always in the light. Even the strongest color cannot permanently withstand the direct UV light and fades over the years. Although you can redye any carpet and repair such areas, however, it makes sense to prevent such processes.

Single-handedly cleaning

Everyone knows it, smaller stains can sometimes happen. Thus, the high-quality wool of the Oriental rugs usually copes with that without any problem, because it contains a natural fat content and is dirt-repellent to a certain degree. Nevertheless, one should not hesitate and dab even small stains immediately with a woolen rag and warm water. Detergents usually contain aggressive surfactants that can attack the wool fibers and the color. Therefore, we recommend cleaning smaller stains that cannot be removed with water and cloth according to the following instructions .

For a complete or more intensive cleaning of the Oriental or Persian carpet, we recommend that you order a specialized carpet cleaning service. Detergents wash out the grease of the wool and remove the natural protective coating of the carpet. Without a subsequent care of the carpet, it can lose its shine and be much more prone to dirt and damage.
